Exercise has not always been a permanent part of my life. In fact, growing up, I was uncoordinated and felt a bit awkward in my own body. I grew very fast so I had a hard time trying to figure out how to move my rapidly growing appendages with grace and ease. I remember like it was yesterday the disappointment on not making the 8th grade softball team. I was very lucky genetically that weight management was not an issue, so the impact of my withdrawal from sports was not immediately visible while I was young. I loved the idea of being active so I studied human anatomy and exercise and became educated in the value of exercise but I did not apply it specifically to my own life.
As I became an adult, I started to deal with the consequences of “lack of purpose driven exercise”. I found myself gaining weight and my family history of high cholesterol was starting to plague me. I was active in spurts and would go through phases where I would commit to a routine and then become disenchanted with the process and quit. How many of you find this to be a similar story? Have you seen results?
The turning point for me was when I hired a personal trainer, someone who understood what I was going through and was willing to tutor me and guide me to put my knowledge into practical application. I invested quite a bit into this person and found myself looking forward to each session rather than dreading them. I found that being accountable was important when my old habits of finding excuses NOT to exercise starting rolling through my head. The changes began first in my thought processes once I met these old behaviors dead on, then with consistency and commitment I started seeing amazing changes in my energy levels and in my body. The rest is history; I fell in love with exercise and the pleasure of feeling fit and ready to meet each day. I quickly became a Certified Personal Trainer and found myself with a successful business due to the fact that as a mother of three I had worked to overcome many common obstacles that are faced in today’s society.
My passion for exercise has helped many men, women and children over the last 15 years. For all of YOU who are looking to find a starting point, reach out to a professional. Exercise and the value of being fit will be an unattainable goal without consistency and a true commitment to your total wellness. I love how you shared this in a personal way and in
a conversational easy to read style. I am moving from physical therapy mode to physical fitness mode after
years of limited activity. It is perfect how you take an individual approach with a variety of specialty exercises.
It makes such perfect sense to have a trainer to guide
you through the proper technique and see to it that your form is correct, too.
Sounds like your clients are lucky to have you!

Thanks so much Robin! Sometimes it does take a very individualized approach with some real honesty on both sides to see positive results. The relationship betwen trainer and client is a very special one and I so appreciate your response. I am excited to wake up every morning to do what I do, how lucky is tht? Have a wonderful day!

Feeling Alive!
I feel great!! I have to share my story. I’ve been overweight most of my life – in the last 20 years to the tune of 100+ pounds overweight (after quitting smoking). As a child, I was never able to do much physical activity. My “event” in track and field day in elementary school was walking while balancing a book on my head without dropping it! Sad, huh? (But I was really good at it – ha!!) I started coming to The Spa a couple years ago with a really messed up shoulder that Sonya has rehabilitated very well for me. Then I started working with Ricardo for nutrition and weight loss. I had lost almost 50 pounds over the past two years and was “stuck.” Everything pointed to exercising my body to be able to lose the rest, but I still resisted. At one of the many FREE meetings at The Spa a couple months ago, I won a FREE fitness evaluation with Teryl and eventually she talked me into starting a personal training program with her. You mean the kid with the book on her head???!!! That’s the one! After only 8 sessions with Teryl, I have advanced from the bands to the TRX (what a blast – who knew!!), lost 6 pounds of fat and many inches (not sure of the number), gained muscle mass, lowered my BMI, gained strength and energy, and am feeling alive! All these years I didn’t know that being fat was stealing my life (because it took all the energy I had to be fat!!). If you’re someone who never was able to do physical activity (by the way, that book-balancing thing really doesn’t count), please let me encourage you to talk to Teryl because if she can help me, I know she can help you! At 53, I know the best is yet to come and I’m thankful for ALL my friends at The Spa on Green Street and The Body Sanctuary for helping me in my journey to becoming healthy and fit enough to enjoy the rest of the ride!! Love you guys!
