Many women turn to prenatal massage to ease the lower back pain that goes along with pregnancy, however a study conducted by researchers at the University of Miami reveals many benefits in addition to pain relief. The study split the 149 pregnant participants into two groups- members of one group receiving two massages per week from the fifth to the seventh months of their pregnancies and members of the other group receiving no massages. The women in the group receiving massage showed lower stress levels and less back pain. However, they also showed fewer signs of depression and had fewer overall prenatal complications.
The most surprising and potentially beneficial finding was the relationship between massage and the serious complications of low birth weight and premature birth. They group which received massage had a 75% lower rate of premature birth and an 80% lower rate of low birth weight babies.
The Spa on Green Street offers luxurious one hour and 90 minute prenatal massage for women past their first trimester of pregnancy.
